Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?

As AI assistants add advertising, business owners are asking whether they can buy their way into the answer. Here is what you can and cannot pay for, and why the organic mention is still the prize.

It is the natural question once you realise AI is sending customers to your competitors: can I just pay to be in the answer? With assistants starting to experiment with advertising, the line between paid and earned is getting blurry. Here is the honest state of play, and why the mention you cannot buy is the one worth chasing.

When an AI assistant answers a question, what you see can come from two very different places:

  • The organic answer. The names the model recommends because it judges them the best fit, based on everything it has read about them. This is earned, not bought.
  • Paid placements. Sponsored slots, ads or promoted suggestions that some assistants have begun testing, marked in various ways depending on the product.

These are not the same, and customers increasingly know the difference. A name the AI chose to recommend carries trust. A slot that was clearly paid for carries a lot less.

What you can pay for today

The advertising side of AI search is young and changing fast, so treat specifics as a moving target. Broadly, what is emerging looks like the early days of search ads: sponsored suggestions, promoted answers and paid placements around the edges of the response. If those fit your budget and your market, they can be a legitimate channel, the same way Google Ads is.

But two cautions matter:

  1. Ads rent attention, they do not build trust. The moment you stop paying, you disappear. The organic recommendation keeps working.
  2. The formats are unsettled. What is available and how it is labelled will keep shifting. Do not build your whole strategy on a placement that may look different next quarter.

What you cannot pay for, and why it is the prize

You cannot buy the organic recommendation. No one can sell you a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT's honest answer to "who is the best accountant in Brisbane," because that answer is assembled from evidence across the web, not from a rate card. That is exactly what makes it valuable. It is the shortlist customers trust, and it is earned through the same signals we write about throughout this blog: clear pages, genuine reviews, consistent details and credible mentions. For the mechanics, see How AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend.

If a competitor is winning that answer and you are not, the fix is not a payment, it is closing the gap. We cover that in Why AI recommends your competitor instead of you.

Watch out for anyone selling guarantees

A quick warning. As this space heats up, you will see people offering "guaranteed ChatGPT rankings" or "pay to be number one in AI." Be sceptical. Nobody controls the organic answer, and anyone promising to place you inside it for a fee is selling certainty they cannot deliver. Real, durable visibility comes from the unglamorous work, not a shortcut.

Start with what the answer says now

Before you spend a dollar on ads or agencies, find out where you actually stand. Run a free AI check to see how often ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity recommend your business today, and who they name instead. If the organic answer already leans your way, protect it. If it does not, that is your real work, and it is cheaper than any ad. The businesses that win AI search will be the ones that earned the answer, not the ones that rented a slot beside it.
