How to show up in Perplexity (and why it matters for Australian businesses)

Perplexity recommends businesses differently to ChatGPT: it cites live web sources on almost every answer. Here is how to become one of the sources it pulls from.

Perplexity is the AI assistant most worth understanding on its own, because it works differently to the others. Where ChatGPT often answers from memory, Perplexity searches the live web on almost every query and shows its sources. If you want it to recommend you, you have to become one of those sources.

Why Perplexity is its own game

Most assistants blend two things: what they learned in training and what they read live. Perplexity leans hard on the live half. Ask it for "the best conveyancer in Newcastle" and it runs a search, reads the top pages, and builds an answer with citations attached.

That has a clear consequence. With Perplexity, your visibility depends less on being famous and more on being findable and citable right now. A business with current, well-structured, credible pages can show up immediately, even if it is not a household name. For the wider picture of how assistants assemble these shortlists, see How AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend.

What actually gets you cited

1. Be on the pages Perplexity already trusts

Perplexity often cites directories, review sites, local press and well-known industry pages before it cites individual business sites. Being present and accurate on the sources it tends to pull from puts you in the answer even when it does not link you directly. Think reputable local directories, your Google Business Profile, and any credible "best X in [city]" coverage.

2. Make your own pages easy to quote

When it does read your site, it wants a clear, quotable answer. Short, direct sentences that state what you do, where, and the specifics (price ranges, service areas, what makes you different) are far easier to cite than a wall of marketing copy. Put the answer near the top, not buried.

3. Keep it current

Because Perplexity reads live, freshness counts more than it does elsewhere. A page updated this quarter beats one untouched since 2022. Even small, genuine updates signal that the page is live and maintained.

4. Earn genuine reviews

Review content is some of the most-cited material in local queries. Volume helps, but so does specificity and recency. We go deeper on this in Do online reviews affect what AI recommends?

What does not work

  • Keyword stuffing. Perplexity is reading for meaning and citing real sources, not counting keywords.
  • Thin, templated pages with nothing quotable on them.
  • Assuming your ChatGPT result tells you your Perplexity result. They genuinely differ, which is why we track all four assistants rather than one.

A simple way to start

  1. Search Perplexity yourself for the questions your customers ask ("best [your service] in [your city]"). Note who it cites and whether you appear.
  2. Get accurate on the directories and review sites it tends to pull from.
  3. Rewrite your top service page so the key facts are clear and quotable near the top.
  4. Ask recent happy customers for a review this week.

Then measure. A free AI check runs your customers' questions across Perplexity and the other three assistants so you can see exactly where you stand, and the Australian AI Visibility Index shows who currently leads your category. Perplexity rewards the businesses that are easy to find and easy to quote, which is good news if you are willing to do the basics before your competitors do.
