Why your business isn't showing up in AI search (and how to fix it)

Seven common reasons AI assistants leave your business out of their recommendations, and the practical fix for each one.

If you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a business like yours and your name never comes up, it is rarely because you are not good enough. It is almost always one of a handful of fixable reasons. Here are the seven we see most, with the fix for each.

1. The AI cannot tell what you actually do

Vague website copy is the number one cause. "Tailored solutions for discerning clients" tells a model nothing it can repeat to a customer.

Fix: state your core service and your suburbs in plain words, on your homepage and your service pages. Specific beats clever every time.

2. You have no presence on sources AI trusts

If nobody credible has written about you, the model has no evidence to lean on when deciding who to name.

Fix: earn a few genuine mentions where your industry's credible coverage lives, such as local press, a reputable directory, or a detailed customer story. A small number of good ones is plenty.

3. Your details do not match across the web

Different business names, an old phone number, a changed address. These small inconsistencies make a model unsure it is even looking at one business, so it plays safe and names someone else.

Fix: make your name, phone and service area identical across your site, your Google Business Profile and every listing.

4. You are checking one assistant and assuming the rest

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity do not agree. Being invisible on one does not mean you are invisible on all, and vice versa. Judging your position from a single assistant is a common, costly mistake.

Fix: check all four. A free AI check runs your questions across every one so you see your real coverage, not a lucky or unlucky single result.

5. Your reviews are thin or generic

Reviews are evidence. Few of them, or vague ones, give the model little to work with and little reason to trust you over a competitor.

Fix: ask happy customers for reviews, and where it feels natural, encourage them to name the specific job and suburb. Specific reviews are far more useful than "great service."

6. You are targeting the wrong query

You might be recommended for "plumber Geelong" but absent for "emergency plumber Geelong" or "bathroom renovation plumber Geelong." Assistants match the exact service, not just the trade, so a narrow gap can hide a whole stream of work.

Fix: work out the specific questions your best customers ask and make sure your site answers each one plainly. The step-by-step is in How to get recommended by ChatGPT.

7. A competitor simply got there first

Sometimes nothing is wrong with you. A competitor just did the basics earlier, so the assistants learned their name and not yours. That is a head start, not a verdict, and it is reversible.

Fix: close the gap on the items above, then track your progress over time. The reasoning behind this one is in Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor.

Start by seeing the problem

You cannot fix what you cannot see. Before you change anything, run a free AI check to find out exactly how often AI mentions you, which of these reasons applies, and who is getting recommended instead. Then check the Australian AI Visibility Index to see who currently leads your category in your city. The gap is your to-do list.
